Experience

Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC), La Jolla California –
Senior DBA and Developer
10/04 to Present

Consultant to permanent. SAIC’s DBA group consists of several specialized
service groups. I am a member of three of these groups –

Database Engineering: Evaluate and recommend technologies and processes as
relates to database implementations. New products in consideration of purchase
are evaluated on their database implementation. The service group evaluates
whether the implementation meets best practice and SAIC standards. The group also
explores new technologies and best practice procedures. A variety of RDBMS are
included (MS SQL, Oracle, MySQL and legacy main frame systems).
Database Capacity and Planning: This group performs analysis of database
servers approaching critical resource shortages (example: disk space, CPU
utilization, database space) and makes a recommendation of action to the database
owners. The recommendation includes a solution to their immediate issue as well
as long term solutions. The group is also responsible for monitoring of
enterprise applications.
Database Development: Development and enhancements of database objects,
utilities and applications (both web and client based). Projects range from
performance enhancement to a stored procedure to the development of a suite of
web based tools used by the Help Desk.

My original project was to modify, test and implement a trigger based auditing
system on an Oracle 9i database installation. The system monitors selected
PeopleSoft tables and provides information on data that is changed, when it was
changed and who (user or process) performed the change. Delivery of the project
included full documentation and a process that verified both integration to the
PeopleSoft application and that the audit data was being captured. The system was
successfully bundled and deployed with a major PeopleSoft hardware and software
upgrade. I am also a team member directed to gather requirements for a web based
Account Management System. My
responsibility is to analyze current methods and assist in defining a set of
requirements for the new system. This includes defining the current integration
points of the applications. (i.e. what type of user account data is passed from
one system to another and how this is currently done). In addition I have
performed DBA duties in troubleshooting batch processes, stored procedures and
end user processes.

Palomar Pomerado Health System DBA and Developer
02/03 to 02/04 and 04/04 to 10/04

My main responsibility was to provide DBA duties for Oracle 8i & 9i databases.
This included monitoring logs, backups and database resources. I monitored
database performance and performed maintenance procedures (i.e. analyze
statistics, table space management, user access management and troubleshooting
etc.). I was also responsible for the database during hardware upgrade and
re-location tasks. This included rollback and recovery planning, database and
application verification post upgrade / re-location. I also designed and
developed support processes (automated backup systems, DB re-organization
processes, integration of mainframe to enterprise applications, data loading
etc.). I developed an intranet based DBA Support Tool using VB Script and PL/SQL
scripts on IIS Web Server to simplify maintenance tasks, log management and
database resource monitoring. I developed PL/SQL scripts to maintain data
(archiving, size management, integration to sub systems). I also developed a
system that interfaced data feeds from both mainframe and UNIX environments to
an Oracle based decision support system. Error detection / management, and
re-start logic ensured no data loss and guaranteed chronological loading of data
to the Oracle system. Although Oracle is the prevalent RDBMS, I was also
responsible for maintenance, integration and monitoring of a SQL Anywhere (Sybase
product) server and consultant to MS SQL Server issues.

Brandes Investment Partners DB Analysis and Tuning
02/03 to 04/03

Performance Tuning of existing T/SQL objects (views, indexes, and stored
procedures). Existing software had performance issues once tested on
production-sized databases. My duties were to identify and correct the errant
database objects. Most performance gains were obtained through identifying and
re-writing SQL code. Some index optimization was implemented as well as view re
structuring. Typical run time decreases were from two minutes plus to under one
second.

CODEBENDER Inc, Del Mar California - Director of Software Engineering
9/01 To 2/03

CodeBender produces and supports a web product called Coordinate. My
responsibilities at CodeBender were to design and develop the database, client
and server side logic. I hired and managed consultants to assist in the coding
and graphic design. Other duties included demonstrating the product to potential
clients and investors. Database modeling was done using ERwin 3.5.2. Coordinate
is a database driven web site with high amounts of user interaction. The user can
upload files, download files, view reports and communicate with other users.
Communication is either via a note system or by email written and maintained by
Coordinate but also sent to the recipients email address. In addition the product
has an administration section where user permissions and roles are set and
maintained by an administrator. I designed and coded all aspects of the system.
The system platform consists of Linux as the server OS, Apache Web Server, and
PHP as the server side processing language and MySQL as the RDBMS. A main design
concern was portability to other database and operating system platforms, this
was achieved and the product can be ported to Oracle or MS SQL based platforms on
either UNIX based or Microsoft operating systems.

DIG MEDIA, Inc., Carlsbad, California - Director of Software Engineering
4/00 to 9/01

Dig Media produces web sites for the entertainment industry. Oracle 8i on NT
interfaced to the web based application on Red Hat Linux running an Apache
Server. I was responsible for designing and directing development of a wide range
of applications and processes. Processes ranged from integrating data from
outside vendors using PL/SQL and Oracle XML to Digital Rights Management
products. Dig Media specialized in designing sites that provide the content owner
secure management of their content while providing the end-user easy access to
their purchased content. The sites are end user oriented designed for intuitive
and easy use. Several interacting sites provide both the administration of
content by the content owners and the consumption of content
by the end user. I acted as a key member in designing all sites and was on a
team of 20 developers who coded, tested and delivered the sites. Dig Media also
produced a stereo web appliance that streamed audio. This allows the end user
access to their audio content from either their PC browser or through the stereo
web appliance. All products were delivered successfully on time, on budget and
launched at the Winter 2001 CES show in Las Vegas. During this time, Dig Media
was the only group worldwide to deploy a high traffic web site for Virgin Records
and the Platinum band Daft Punk using InterTrust s DRM technology. Technologies
used were Linux as the OS, Apache Web Server, and PHP as the server side
processing and Oracle as the RDBMS.

PIMCO, Newport Beach, California Sr. DBA
1/98 to 3/00

Senior DBA responsible for daily tactical processes as well as analysis of
system for performance gains. Tasks included installing SQL Monitor and History
servers, collecting and analyzing performance data, reconfiguring Sybase data
devices, migration of the data to the new databases. The DBA group was also
responsible for source code management. Thus my responsibilities included
directing tasks of those developers assigned to assist in source code management.
I was also responsible for the directing all tasks of the DBA staff. Other
responsibilities included installing and directing the maintenance of the backup
server. The on site redundant server used Sybase
Replication server to keep the redundant server current to the main server. Also
assisted developers in SQL scripting and devised alternate methods for both daily
transaction and nightly batching processing. Invited to join various
groups in designing backup and disaster recovery policies and procedures. Also
participated in in-house software release process, which occurred every six
weeks.

CAPITOL GROUP, Brea, California Consultant/DBA

system consisted of a Sybase 11.0.2 database, HP UNIX shell scripts and a
PowerBuilder front end. UNIX and SQL scripts ran as nightly batch processes
building the account summaries in database tables. The data was written to flat
files that were evaluated by the end user and eventually sent electronically to
outside concerns. Performed all business analysis, database modeling, database
creation and SQL and UNIX script coding.
