Software Engineer/Architect/DBA
Client generates massive sets of raw data, and needed access within hours to
selected portions for detailed analysis. Replaced a technology where turn-around
time was two to three weeks because altering selection criteria was done by
hand-coding. Designed and deployed a database server, using PostgreSQL and a
client application using Cocoa, with ODBC to connect them. Users are happy.
Client tool is simple, intuitive and fast. Built to a rapidly evolving spec,
using modern software strategies. Features: DB abstraction layer, parser for
multiple data-file-input formats, flexible SQL query generator, simple and
powerful data definition syntax, server-side stored procedures for high-speed DB
logic, cache management, full documentation. Solved emergent problems: (a) fast
responsiveness across heterogeneous memory environments and (b) live navigation
of massive quantities of data with an agility that pushed hard at kernel
limitations. Released version 1.0.
Agile Mind, San Francisco, CA Jul 2006-Sep 2007
Web Developer, Documentation
Client 's web development outstripped existing resources. Few who were involved
understood the code; adding new features had become impossible. Analyzed and
documented existing code. Designed and implemented new customer support tools.
Designed and implemented database and front-end for high-speed analysis and
processing of incoming data files, to replace existing obsolete and inadequate
code. Designed and implemented front-end UI for improved access to large data
sets. Eliminated many man-months of in-house effort and tedium.
GizmoLab, Inc. Boulder Creek, CA 2002-Present
Chief Architect (Provided creative solutions to client problems and productize
them for market)
Time spent submitting bids hampered client 's business profitability.
Discovered that each bid required manual labor and expertise and the yield was
poor. Proposed software bidding concept that partially automates the process and
developed a working product. Currently available on both Windows and Mac OS X,
Design Intuition dramatically reduces bidding process and helps accurately
estimate overall project cost and time. This breakthrough product won an award
from a national magazine. Designed, developed and deployed all business logic,
web site, support material and customer data on UNIX-based servers, running 24x7.
Manage offshore engineering team, developing version 2.
Learning Byte International, Minneapolis, MN 2000-2001
Software Consultant
Developed DHTML prototypes for a learning methodology using HTML, CSS-P
JavaScript.
eMedius, Inc. Santa Cruz, CA 2000-2001
Software Consultant
Client needed a quick and secure way to send Instant Messages to its customers.
Researched, evaluated and wrote recommendations report. Installed and configured
a Jabber server and wrote client-side java code to use Jabber server to implement
full-featured, customizable Instant Messaging system. The project was completed
in four months and all documentation delivered.
GizmoLab, Boulder Creek, CA 2000-2002
R&D Architect
A diet-conscious client was frustrated with keeping track of daily calorie
intake and managing the breakdown of how those calories were consumed by food
types. Quickly discovered that this was a widely felt need. Using Java,
downloaded the entire nutritional data available from the FDA first into
postgreSQL and later into OODB. Developed a complete software program that
allowed calculating calories based on the ingredients from a recipe, making it
easy for the user to estimate not only the calorie intake but also the origins of
those calories by specific food groups such as trans-fats. The program also
provided daily, weekly, and monthly calorie tallies.
CIME Software Labs, LLC, San Francisco, CA 1999-2000
Consultant
A small start-up was developing a way to present, on newly sold PCs, online
information about software products. However, the size of the storage required to
implement this idea was considered impractical because of the large memory
requirements of off-the-shelf databases. Developed a plan to implement the
concept with much smaller memory demand. Designed and built a very low profile,
Java-based, OODB. Within nine months OODB was built, delivered, fully integrated
and tested.
GizmoLab, Boulder Creek, CA 1997-1999
Provided project-related work and support to a variety of software companies
engaged in custom application, Web-related tools development, and GUI interface
design and development.
Apple Computer, Inc. Cupertino, CA 1994-1997
Senior Scientist (Responsible for several low-level components of Mac OS-7 and
OS-8)
Designed and delivered Arbitration Services for Mac OS-8 and Core I/O.
Designed and developed Real-time Clock family components for Mac OS-8 Core I/O
system.
Completed Driver Service Library
Developed Macintosh CD_ROM driver for both SCSI and ATAPI CD-ROM (C and
assembler)
GizmoLab, Boulder Creek, CA 1980-1993
