Objective
Seeking a position as Netbackup and Storage consultant
Work Experience
Senior Netbackup Consultant
7/2008 – Present, Hyatt Leader Consulting Services, New York, New York
• Contracted by Hyatt Leader Consulting Services to assist Time Life Inc. with
their netbackup environment. Upgraded 5 master/media servers and 14 media
servers from version netbackup 5.1 to netbackup 6.5. Simplified netbackup
policies – merged 131 policies down to 17. Consolidated/ migrated 4 netbackup
master servers to 2 master servers on new hardware (SUN X4600s). Installed and
configured SL8500 tape library. Set up tape vaulting and offsite procedures for
Tampa facility. Automated tape injects and ejects with ACSLS. Implemented
backups over WAN. Network analysis showed that sufficient bandwidth existed on
week nights and weekends to make this possible. Backups are offsite immediately
without the need for tape vaulting. Improved backup and restore SLAs. Worked
with windows and unix admins to resolve netbackup client issues in a timely
manner. This resulted in a 99% backup and restore success rate. Implemented
Netbackup Operations Monitoring. This report writer was used to obtain the
status of nightly backups and analyze the backup environment. The reporter was
used to eliminate duplicate backups between data centers saving 10 terabytes of
tape per week. The report writer was also used to provide reports for SOX
compliancy. Performed backup audit of all servers. Worked with Windows and Unix
Teams to be sure all clients are backed up. Converted 70 unix and 15 windows
servers from Tivoli to Netbackup. Worked with Tivoli customers to be sure backup
policies in netbackup met their current SLA with Tivoli. Implemented Netbackup
MS-SQL agent for MS-SQL servers. Simplified backups by not having to dump to
disk and backup to tape. Backups are done directly to tape thus saving disk
because disk based dump areas are no longer needed.
Senior Netbackup Consultant
6/2008 – 7/2008 Collective Technologies, Austin, Texas
Contracted by Symantec Corporation Consulting Services to assist the
New York Police Department with their Netbackup 6.5 implementation. Installed
netbackup 6.5 on windows 2003 master/media server. Installed client on 70 SUSE
linux clients and 30 Windows 2003 clients. Configured disk staging for archive
log backups to meet stringent database archiving SLAs. Mentored NYPD staff on
how to setup, configure, and maintain a netbackup environment. Emphasis was put
on simplicity of policy design to avoid creating an overly complex and convoluted
backup environment. Recommend backup strategies to insure the integrity of NYPD
data (weekly, month end, and yearend). Created vaulting procedures to facilitate
sending tapes offsite. Created an onsite pool for immediate restores of any data
less than three weeks old. Installed and configured Lotus notes agent and DB2
agents. Both agents were configured for hot online backups. Configured backup
and restore templates for DB2 backups. Instructed client in the use of templates
simple database backups, restores, and point-in-time recovery. Installed
Baremetal Recover for Windows 2003 and SUSE Linux clients. Instructed Client in
the use of BMR and some mock DR recoveries. Installed and configured VERITAS
Backup Reporter V6.2. Created reports per NYPD specifications. Configured SMTP

Senior Netbackup Architect and Engineer
12/2007 - 5/2008 IRIS Software, Edison, NJ
Contracted by Iris Software to assist Thomson Financial in tuning their
netbackup environment and resolving various backup issues. The primary purpose
of my contract was to tune the Netbackup environment to improve backup throughput
and use less resources. This goal was accomplished by following best practices
for Netbackup tuning and simplification of backup policies and procedures. The
results of tuning and simplification are as follows: 1) Eliminated missed
backups in the Boston and NJ Datacenters. There were over 600 missed backups
each day between the two datacenters. 2) Updated exclude lists on backup clients
saving 15Terabytes of tape/week. 3) Located 3000 scratch tapes off site and
called back for reuse. 4) Tuning and load balancing eliminated the need for new
backup equipment. 5) Set up storage groups to allow backups to use any netbackup
media server. This enabled all media servers to operate at full capacity which
resulted in all backups completing each night. The use of storage groups also
enabled backups to continue in the event of a media server failure.6) Implemented
flashbackup for large media servers. This enabled large windows bases file
servers with 10 Million+ files to backup each night.7) Implemented user initiated
backups for databases (oracle and sql server). The resolving of backup issues was
done on a client by client basis. Most issues involved improper netbackup client
configuration, client network settings, out of date client software, and/or
improper switchport settings.
Sr. Netbackup Consultant
10/2007 - 12/2007 Glasshouse, Boston, Mass
Contracted by glasshouse to assist in backup outsourcing. The scope of
the project was to initially transfer the process and procedures currently in use
to Glasshouse. The second phase of the project was to make recommendations to
improve the backup process, procedures, and reporting.
Sr. Vertias Netbackup Engineer
7/2007 - 10/2007 CDI Corp, Jersey City, New Jersey
Contracted to The Hartford to simplify and redesign their Netbackup
environment. Reduced the number of general netbackup policies from 3302 to 2137.
Made Recommendations to eliminate the use of problematic BCV oracle backups in
favor of RMAN and SSO. There were over +2500 BCV backups kicked off via autosys
that were becoming unmanageable. The conversion to RMAN will reduce the number
of oracle backup polices down to under 500 policies and eliminate the need to use
Autosys. Headed up effort to reduce backup errors impacting service level
agreements. Backup errors were tracked and eliminated through the use of problem
ticketing and escalation. Backup errors were previously left to be corrected by
system administrators. Shifting backup error resolution to the backup team
greatly improved the Backup Teams SLA metrics.
