Resume - senior chemist
EXPERIENCE
Senior Chemist, Manager, Consultant of Manganese C from 10/2000 to 5/2007
Carus Chemical company - LaSalle, IL
R&D Achievements
•Developed and commercialized several series of nanosized catalysts with
annual revenue of over $6M and gross margin of over 30%. Catalysts are used for
air purification, escape masks, and air separation.
•Simplified process that produced high quality Li-spinel, a revolutionary
generation rechargeable battery material.
•Invented a procedure to effectively remove chromium which generated two
higher value new hazardous remediation grade products.
•Created method to synthesize tetramethypyruvic acid, the important
intermediate for anti-HIV drugs.
Achievements in Manufacturing
•Re-designed process for liquid sodium permanganate production. Capacity
increased by an order of magnitude, with significantly less unit energy
consumption and better quality.
•Designed catalyst programs that trained, educated and audited key personnel
in R&D, manufacturing, and Quality Assurance/Quality Control according to
principles of total quality management and statistic process control.
Achievements in QA/QC, and Customer Services
•Proposed routes for improved QA/QC of MnO2 based products, while correcting
fault QC methods and procedures.
•Generated mechanism that proactively avoided quality defects and promptly
recognized and corrected any defects through careful process design and
management, using Six-sigma methodology and TQM principles.
•Investigate, recognized, and solved problems of malfunction-inefficiency of
catalytic devices in customer’s locations.
Postdoctoral Research Fellow from 7/1999 to 9/2000
LAWRENCE BERKELEY NATIONAL LABORATORY, Chemical Sc - Berkeley, CA
• Developed highly active nanosize multi-component Bi-V-Mo, Bi-Fe-Mo, Bi-Ta-Mo
catalysts for allylic oxidation. The surface areas of catalysts are of one
magnitude higher than those reported.
• Elucidated the mechanism of selective oxidation of propane to acrolein and
corresponding kinetics over multi-component oxides catalysts.
Research Assistant from 8/1994 to 6/1999
UNIVERSITY OF CONNECTICUT, Department of Chemistry - Storrs, CT
• Developed several methods such as reflux, sol-gel, and hydrothermal that
prepared layered and tunnel manganese oxides and many other transition metal
oxides (including pillared forms).
• Prepared microporous, mesoporous and nanosized manganese oxides and other
transition metal oxides or kmetallosilicates, all with significant catalytic
significance.
• Prepared hydrophobic octahedral molecular sieves such as hollandite for
selective absorption and total oxidation of environmental volatile organic
compounds at low temperatures.
• Developed breakthrough in energy resource exploration by designing processes
for production of hydrogen via low-temperature plasma-induced water splitting and
steam-reforming of methane.
• Invented all quartz/glass plasma reactors for low-temperature plasma
activation of small molecules of CH4, H2O, NOx, CO, CO2, and N2. For the first
time isolated the catalytic effects of metal surfaces from inert surfaces.
assistant professor from 6/1988 to 7/1994
INSTITUTE OF COAL CHEMISTRY, ACADEMIA SINICA, Taiy - Taiyuan, ZZ
• Conducted research on sampling and analysis of environmental carcinogenic
polynuclear aromatics (Chinese DOE Young Researcher Fund, principal investigator
(PI))
• Carried out research to selectively convert bio-ethanol to ethylene and to
diethyl ether over Silicalite-I, HZSM-5.
• Oxidation state and distribution of Ga in Ga-exchanged or Ga-impregnated
ZSM-5 and ZSM-5-type gallosilicates (Chinese NSF, PI)
• Coking, deactivation, and regeneration of zeolite catalysts of HZSM-5, Zn-,
Ga-, Cu-ZSM-5, USHY and mordenite in toluene disproportionation and propane
aromatization (Chinese DOE Fund, PI)
• Aromatization of LPG and light naphtha over metal modified ZSM-5 catalysts
in fixed-bed reactors. State 7th Five-Year Important Project, awarded 3rd class
National Prize of Science Advancement, the highest Scientific Prize in China.
