03/1996 – 02/2010 Hewitt Associates, Lincolnshire, IL
SQL Server Production Database Administrator / Data Modeler

Hewitt Associates is one of the world's leading HR consulting and outsourcing
companies specializing in HR consulting and outsourcing for global organizations.
Hewitt client list is a mix of complex global organizations and growing mid-sized
businesses. Hewitt serves nearly two-thirds of the FORTUNE 500 companies
globally.
In my 14 years of service for Hewitt Associates, I held 3 roles within IT:
Technical Customer Service Representative (1.5 years), Database Analyst (9.5
years), and SQL Server Database Administrator (3 years).

6/2007 – 2/2010	SQL Server Production Database Administrator
In the past SQL Server was not a managed database system supported by a DBA team
at Hewitt Associates. Application owners managed their database server
independently of the DBA Operations team. Due to SAS70, Hewitt formed a SQL
Server DBA team to lockdown and manage all SQL Servers across the Enterprise and
implement internal control structures. As one of the 6 members of the SQL Server
DBA team, we developed implemented, supported and trained clients on the new
processes, procedures and policies required to support and manage the SQL Server
internal and external clients. In addition to implementing the separation of
duties and governance controls, we provided day-to-day maintenance, support and
administration of over 500 servers in Test, Development, QA, QC and Production
environments for 6800 databases across various server technologies and
configurations.

Responsibilities, Tasks and Projects:
Installation and Configuration: Performed SQL Server upgrades from 2000 to 2005
and 2008. Involved in all aspects of the SQL Server installation including
configuration of Windows Server 2003 and other software components such as our
third-party backup utility, Tivoli, Reporting Services, and notification alerts.
Created best practices and instructional documentation to support the sql server
setup and configuration. Work with Windows, Hardware and Network extended teams
to provide guidance and specifications for database and web servers.

Service Packs and Security Updates: Implement new service packs and security
updates to release new functionality, performance improvement and ensure systems
remain stable and secure. Worked with Windows Admin team to setup a phased
approach schedule to test sql servers after Windows OS service pack and security
updates and test
before migrating to subsequent lifecycles. Applied vendor-provided software
upgrades and patches to the database management systems and applications
software.

Security: Apply SQL Server security lockdown to all application database servers
using both, Windows Authentication and SQL Server Authentication to remove
sysadmin access. Work with application teams to define and setup users in Active
Directory Windows Domain groups with relevant access. Setup, troubleshoot and
configure user connectivity and security accounts. Setup automated Windows OS
and database security alerts to look for security changes or unauthorized
database changes. Created security policies and best practice documentation.
Wrote a workflow process and trained application developers on new security
administration and controls.

Recoverability: Backup and Restore: Ensure all database are backed up on a
regular basis and verify backup files are available for restore from Tivoli
Storage Manager server. Created database maintenance plans and schedules to
automate full, differential, transaction log type backups. Developed automated
daily, weekly and monthly system maintenance tasks such as database backup,
replication verification, database integrity verification and indexing updates.
Setup automated alerts for backup failures. Created recovery for SME DBAs to use
for backup failure. Experience restoring backup source file to remote target
server across domains.

•	Project lead for defining and implementing requirements for Tivoli servers to
only back up SQL Server files and retain backups based on client requirements.
•Project lead for verifying all Window servers have the disk capacity to support
local backups. Created alerts and procedures for DBAs to manage SQL server
capacity and growth. Chair weekly meetings with windows admin team to improve
communication and sql servers stability, security and performance.

Change Management: Created and maintained logical and physical data models.
Worked closely with development team to modify existing schema to improve
performance and functionality of the developed applications. Created DDL and DML
for all new database objects: tables, views, indexes, triggers and stored
procedures. Provided application developers schema change impact analysis
reports. Developed execution of change workflow process and SLAs to test and
propagate changes through database lifecycles. Trained application developers on
Change Manager Requests.

Service Levels: Research Service Level Agreements (SLAs) across SQL Server
internal and external clientele. Negotiate, document and implement Hewitt
standard SLAs across SQL Server enterprise application database community and
relevant extended teams.

System Monitoring: Routinely monitored over 175 production database servers with
Idera Diagnostic Manager in order to eliminate outages or service variations and
trend information. Used system monitor to identify resource issues and SSMS
Activity monitor for internal performance information. Configure alerts to report
on CPU levels, I/O statistics, processes, lock escalations, blocking and buffer
cache usage for production and non production servers. Setup central
knowledgebase with problems and solutions for DBA team. Created feedback form
using Survey Monkey to gather regular information about how the users feel the
system is responding and work to identify potential problems from the information
they provide.

Performance Tuning and Optimization: Perform problem solving and troubleshooting
techniques to determine if the cause is network, sql server, memory or I/O.
Investigate, analyze and implement changes if required. Analyze Sql Server logs
and Windows event logs. Work with application team to configure and \ or
troubleshoot connectivity issues. Work with application team and/or vendor to
stress test database. Created various checklist and troubleshooting documentation
for help desk to collect good data to assist DBAs better debug problems.
Shared rotation 24/7 on call schedule with 6 DBAs.

Routine Maintenance: Regularly performed scheduled maintenance off business
hours to install service pack or security update, introduce new code, or support
application change. Automated and monitored regular maintenance tasks including:
Index rebuilds, compressing data files, update statistics, database consistency
checks.

Disaster Recovery: Developed a Disaster Recovery test plan and procedures.
Performed Disaster Recovery semi-annual exercise. Configured and monitored SQL
replication and database mirroring.

Reliability: Worked on high availability projects to design high availability
SQL Server solutions that include: Log shipping, Replication, Mirroring,
Clustering and SAN replication on 32 and 64 bit machines.

Capacity Planning: Setup alerts and regularly monitor server disk capacity and
database size to ensure there is sufficient disk space to host the required
amount of data. Work with the development teams to determine requirements for
new and existing applications.

Procedure and SSIS Development: Created stored procedures to perform insertions,
updates and deletions. Supported application user stored procedures to implement
advance logic to provide datasets to customers or perform data feeds to web
pages. Wrote ETL stored procedures in DTS, and SSIS to extract data from source,
apply logic and load data into target database. Used ETL to load data into SQL
Server from other destinations such as Access, spreadsheets and text files.

SQL Database and Documentation: Maintained internal SQL server tracking
reference database for DBAs. The Tracking database stored data about all the sql
servers supported. Created and maintained all documentation for all SQL server
internal and external applications including; configuration documents
(information about the installation and configuration of the sql server instance,
hardware and operating system.
