AMICAS, Inc. (www.amicas.com) is a leader in radiology and medical image &
information management solutions, providing end-to-end solutions for imaging
centers, ambulatory care facilities, and radiology practices. Core member of the
software development team responsible for the development, implementation, and
support of the flagship product, AMICAS Radiology Information System (RIS). Major
projects and achievements include:
Project: Database re-engineering
Was part of an ongoing effort to modify and enhance the existing underlying data
model of the RIS. Worked in collaboration with the database administrator to
identify areas in the data model that required normalization efforts.
• Identified underperforming database queries using SQL Profiler and JProfiler.
Collaborated with other team members to analyze and eliminate these performance
issues.
• Implemented JAVA/JavaScript code to account for changes made to database
enhancements. Used Spring in conjunction with JDBC connections to implement data
access layer.
• Wrote and executed LoadRunner scripts to validate performance before and after
implementation of changes to ensure adequate performance.
Project: Caching enhancement
The scalability of the system needed to be improved in order to penetrate
unexplored market segments. Required analyzing the workflow of the application,
identifying bottlenecks in application, and implementing critical strategies to
increase scalability. Introduced caching mechanism into RIS application in order
to achieve these objectives
• Examined and identified areas of the application most accessed and best
benefited by caching mechanisms.
• Researched technologies and implementation strategies to establish the most
effective approach for the system.
• Implemented caching using Hibernate and EhCache technologies.
• Wrote and executed LoadRunner scripts and load tests before and after
implementation.

Project: Questionnaire enhancement
A new feature to add version control to the existing questionnaire feature in
the system had to be developed.
• Analyzed existing workflow for the questionnaire feature and determined
customer issues related to its performance and functionality.
• Implemented code changes in JAVA/JavaScript and wrote unit tests (JUnit) for
the new feature. Implemented underlying code in Struts framework .
• Performed preliminary post-implementation testing to ensure correct

• Wrote SRS documentation describing the new feature. Incorporated continuous

Project: Add-Exam capability
Added a new capability that increased users’ flexibility to add exams to patient
visits.
• Eliminated hurdles in existing functionality, making it easier for users to
add missing exams to patient visits at different stages of the system’s
workflow.
• Added user interface for the functionality and implemented all relevant
JAVA/JavaScript code. Used AJAX/DWR to manage user interactions.

• Wrote SRS documentation and unit tests related to new enhancement.

Designed and implemented prototypes for radiological imaging applications.
Duties included evaluating emerging technologies, providing technical expertise
to medical personnel, and training colleagues in the protocol of DICOM and JAVA
technologies. Mentored summer interns to familiarize them with various
programming environments and operating systems. Constructed, developed and
maintained various projects related to PACS(Picture Archiving System). Projects

Project: Research and teaching archival tool
Medical images needed to be queried, retrieved, stored and displayed in various
image formats from a PACS.
• Implemented using JAI, Swing, JClass, XML, Servlets, Applets, JINI and
LiveConnect.
• Developed system and modules with JBuilder 5.0. Ran on an IPlanet web server
in an UNIX environment.
Project: ECG viewer
Waveform data from DICOM image files had to be extracted and displayed.
Extracted data using Emageon’s JDDK and displayed using Sitraka’s JClass
Library.
Project: Dictation module
Multiple audio formats from various audio devices had to be recorded and played
back. Incorporated audio with the DICOM imaging protocol. Used Merges DICOM
Toolkit to handle DICOM related development.
Project: Model PACS
Created DICOM image files from other image formats. Used JBuilder 3.0 and
Emageon’s JDDK. Deployed on an IBM Workstation.
