Hartz Mountain Corporation, Bloomfield, NJ 2001 - 2006
Sr. Scientist, Chemical Product Development
Responsible for the identification, acquisition, development and licensing of
technologies used primarily in animal care OTC & Pharmaceutical product
applications. Responsible to develop new product and testing methodologies
ranging from skin to household care new applications. Oversaw all claim
substantiation for Internal (Regulatory, Consumer Relations & Legal Departments)
as well as External (FDA “ CVM, EPA, DVM “ UK, Japanese, Canadian & Korean
Health Ministries). Supervised One Chemist and One Technician coached and
counseled two Junior Chemists and assisted the Director in the daily running of
the laboratory (10 people) as well as set up annual capital budgets.

By using new product development using tools such as SWOT Analysis, Project
Management, lean and agile techniques, statistical techniques such as Design of
Experiments along with creating partnerships with suppliers, inventors, academic
institutions and customers (Petco, Petsmart, Target & Walmart in particular).
This enabled to introduce new skin, hair and oral new products faster and with
minimum capital investment with an increase of $25 MM in sales.

Development of enhanced product performance achieved by interacting with raw
material suppliers to scout out new actives APIs, controlled release,
encapsulation technologies, topical and permeation enhancers among others that
were used for skin, hair, oral and household care products. This was accomplished
by setting up novel test experiments for determination of diffusion and
controlled release mechanisms. This enabled Hartz to evaluate new ingredients
ranging from insecticides to fragrances and including pharmaceutical and
functional ingredient actives (vitamins, nutraceuticals, etc.), synergists and
actives expeditiously thus introducing new products and technologies faster to
the market.

Set up fast evaluation programs for the quick use and implementation of new
APIs from skin to household care products by leveraging Quantitative
Structure-Activity Relationships (QSAR) as well as Design of Experiments along
with other basic statistical tools that enabled the creation of a database of
actives with their functional effectiveness. By doing this the development
savings in 2004 and 2005 were $300,000 and $ 600,000 respectively.

Extensive formulation development and processing improvements with
Manufacturing in two sites by setting up product development teams consisting of
members from Marketing, Sales, Manufacturing, Regulatory and Quality. Part of
this program was to improve formulations while decreasing manufacturing costs
without sacrificing either product/manufacturing performance, stability or
pricing while reducing costs. Since 2002, savings from this effort were estimated
to be around $5MM.

Set up and led teams to implement a Quality Assurance system with the
Analytical Group for FDA, EPA and OTC products. This was to insure that all new
product development and process improvements were properly defined planned and
delivery met all business and regulatory expectations. As a result, ten new
products were launched in 2003, twelve were launched in 2004, fourteen were
launched in 2005 and 25 were launched in 2006 and as a result five patent
applications were developed.

Designed new Hair, Skin and Oral Care Formulations by using new controlled
delivery technologies such as dissolvable films, buccal and pH sensitive systems
amongst others. For example, by using new controlled delivery technologies along
with developing a greater / deeper understanding of Animal Hair Morphology and
borrowing concepts from Human Hair Care enabled Hartz to speed product
development in shampoos and skin care products, 39 new products were launched in
2005 and 2006.

Lead and developed products from inception to commercialization with
cross-functional teams that had members of the Marketing, Packaging, Consumer
Market Research, Regulatory, Process, Manufacturing, Logistics, Purchasing and
Transportation. This has enabled to effectively launch 40+ products from 2001 “
2006 and few more (~7) were launched in 2007.

Involved in the formulation of new Multivitamins, Nutraceutical and
Functional Ingredients since 2003. Among products launched, breath strips,
vitamin strips, and wormers among others.
