Various Positions May 1989 to December 2005
During a sixteen-year career, positions included managing director/national
production, quality assurance director and project director. Career highlights:
* Strategic initiatives. Managing production and quality-assurance initiatives
for the Northeast and National Editions during growth from 8 to 18 print sites
* Product changes. The national edition experienced paging increases from 64 to
144 pages; color positions from 16 to 32 pages; circulation increases of 100,000
daily and 150,000 Sunday copies; and startup of two Sunday advance printing
sites.
* Revenue increases. Advertising and circulation revenue increased
incrementally by $10Millions, annually.
* Process and metrics. Implementing an internship program with the New York
City College of Technology's Graphic Arts program to measure printed quality of
newspapers.
* Process improvement. Quality scores improved 15.9 percent, and variability
decreased 43.4 percent. Quality improvements drove incremental advertising color
premium revenue over $5Million, annually.
* Process audits. Developing a joint quality and productivity improvement
program with national print-site partners. During a two-and-a-half year period,
only one color advertising credit was issued while producing approximately 650
million copies.
* Product enhancements. Leading launch and process-improvement initiatives for
daily color advertising in the National edition, then heading full rollout of
color for New York, Northeast and National editions.
USA TODAY AND GANNETT CO., INC., ARLINGTON (NOW MCLEAN), VA.
Various Positions June 1982 to April 1989
Joined company upon graduation from college and prior to launch in 1982. During
a seven-year career, positions included color imaging manager and quality
assurance assistant. Highlights:
* Process change. Leading the conversion from conventional to electronic
color-prepress system production, first for USA WEEKEND, a gravure-process
product, then for USA TODAY. A pioneering effort that reduced daily production
deadlines and materials costs by more than $100,000 per year by eliminating film
consumption.
* Quality metrics. Co-developing and implementing a product quality-evaluation
program for all USA TODAY printing sites. Providing objective measures and
performance rankings of key metrics for staff and print-site improvement efforts,
a first in the industry at the time.
* New process implementation. Leading installation of color separation scanners
at local Gannett properties. New opportunities for color advertising brought in
$100,000s in incremental advertising revenue, consumables savings were in the
$10,000s annually, and reduced editorial deadlines produced a more up to date
newspaper.
* Company startup. Serving on the startup team that launched USA TODAY. Setting
up color-scanning programs, procedures and techniques for high quality newsprint
color re-production, a pioneering effort at that time. USA TODAY grew to more
than one million copies in first year and became the national benchmark for how
to produce high-quality color on deadline.
