Professional Experience:
Teaching: College, Technical school, Seminars and workshops, On-the-job
teaching, Lectures and demonstrations to the general public. Main topics:
Biostatistics, Epidemiology. Computer classes at many levels, Using Health
Insurance benefits effectively, Child health for new mothers, Nutrition in the
home, Thinking through Advance Directive Planning - How to make decisions, How to
get complete information as a basis for decisions, Filling out and distributing
relevant forms. Writing and design of curricula for a variety of courses and
workshops.
Writing: Articles for medical journals and other medical publications; Articles
and essays on Medical ethics; Directions for preparing to make advance directive
decisions, and then go on to prepare and execute a plan to establish successful
implementation of the plan; Limericks, Haiku and other poetry, and short stories.
A book on medical euphemisms, and obtaining straight medical information from
medical providers is in progress.
Biostatistics: Medical research including large database Medicare research
(state of Massachusetts); Research in ’Medical Assertiveness Training’ of healthy
seniors to improve the usefulness of each medical interaction between the seniors
and a health professional; Epidemiological research in chronic diseases; Set-up
of a computerized data collection system (vital statistics, communicable disease
tracing, maternal-child health data, cause of death data, water purity analysis,
etc.) in Grenada for the Ministry of Health there.
Administration: Managed staff of 12 in research at a Health Care Analysis firm;
various supervisory positions within research projects; five years supervisory
experience as a registered nurse (in my first professional life).
Nursing: Five years in Boston City Hospital emergency room; seven additional
years in public health (including gum shoe epidemiology in a TB control program
in Boston during an outbreak), plus hospital and home health nursing during
young-children years.
