Senior Software Engineer Snap-On Business Solutions 1995-Present
Richfield, Ohio
Snap-On Business Solutions (SBS) is a global provider of enterprise data
software and services that is highly focused on the automotive, power equipment,
and power sports markets. Software Developers
and Designers of SBS provide business intelligence solutions that are built on a
foundation
of domain knowledge, technology, and customer consideration.
As an integral member of a team of engineers whose responsibilities include the
design, implementation and maintenance of automotive data for a large global
client, I am responsible for reviewing the functional specifications of new
projects, analyzing data provided by the client, and developing strategic
solution(s) to meet the specifications of each project.
Development is done in a UNIX (Solaris 9) environment using
proprietary/non-proprietary technologies and programming languages that include:
C, Perl, UNIX Shell Scripting, Install Shield, TCLTK, JAVA, T-SQL, SQL Server
2005 (SSIS), Oracle PL/SQL, TOAD, and GEAR PRO Mastering Software.
Additionally, I produce, release, and maintain the software, as well as provide
graphic user and menu driven interfaces for production.
Notable Projects and Contributions
* Client was reaching near data capacity (4 GB) on a DVD5 media. A new
strategy needed to be designed and implemented that would be compatible with
their current platform scenario. Using GEAR PRO Mastering Edition, a third party
mastering software, the capacity of the DVD was augmented from a single-sided,
single layer DVD to a single-sided, dual-layer DVD. The installation software was
modified on the media to handle the multiple platform configurations, e.g.
Solaris 9 Server to PC Clients, Windows 98, 2000, and XP stand-alone. This
approach combined multiple products delivered on CDs and DVDs into one media, the
DVD9.
This strategy significantly reduced production time, as well as cost, thereby
saving Snap-On Business Solutions an excess of $100,000 per year.
* For the benefit of improved development environments, SBS continually
upgrades their UNIX operating systems to the newer versions of Solaris and
Oracle. Porting code from Solaris 8 to Solaris 9 and Oracle 8i to Oracle 9i is a
significant operation and requires the production machinery to be shutdown. SBS
was limited by time and therefore the deadline for completion of the transition
was reduced from 6 weeks to 3 weeks.
This operation was completed on time, which resulted in significant cost
reduction for the company and the delivery of the monthly catalog to the client
on schedule.
* A project was delivered to production with a series of complications that
prevented accuracy and smooth delivery. The client, which has an international
presence, faced distribution of a product that had compromised data and was not
efficient in its use. Drawing upon an expertise in problem-solving that requires
the ability to: analyze existing code; determine what is salvageable and
repairable and can be debugged; as well as implement a solution to rectify the
problem, the code was rewritten in Oracle PL/SQL.
The delivery of excellent data quality and data integrity resulted in the
renewal of the contract by the client which translated into generated revenue of
more than $200,000 per year for the life of the contract.
* Recognizing the need to move the client to a web-based application, SBS set
out to develop a universal electronic parts catalog that could be delivered
directly to the clients via the web. Upon receiving the specifications from the
architecture team, it was determined that the development team would publish the
data using T-SQL in a SQL Server 2005 environment. The next step involved
publishing the data in Oracle tables using PL/SQL.
The project was completed on time and was representative of the efficiency and
dedication of the team of which I was an integral member.
