ACADEMIC PROJECTS:
Project Name : Remotely Tracking Locations Using GPS Applications
Client : Vehicles Research and Development Establishment,
(V.R.D.E) Ahamadnagar
Duration : 10 weeks
Team Size : 3
Environment : VC++ and dynamic socket programming under Windows 2000
Description : The project was aimed to track the exact location of the
system, which is interfaced with the GPS toolkit, from a distant system. The data
is obtained from the GPS in terms of 13byte fixed strings, which are built based
on the NMEA standards. These strings can be obtained by simply reading the serial
port of the REMOTE system. After getting these strings they need to be remotely
sent to the CONSOLE system. In other words, project goal is to remotely track the
location of an object without physically surveying that geographical spot. The
application further extends for being able to locate the position on to the
designed map. This system is commonly used in ARMY to keep an eye on every
movement of enemy, in nuclear areas, sewage areas. Further scope is to detect the
changes in the Earth’s core and predict the occurrence of volcanic eruptions,
weather forecasting, in getting signals from different planets.
Today, GPS receivers are embedded in automobiles. The killer application
of the GPS is to know a position in real time. It Saves a position and shows the
distance/direction from your current position to the saved position, ensuring
that you will always find your way back. GPS devices can be connected to computer
in number of ways i.e. Standard Serial Port, USB, BLUETOOTH and CF Slot.
Protocols used to communicate with GPS are SiRF and Garmin. National Marine
Electronics Association (NMEA) 0183 is a most supported protocol. NMEA is a
simple ASCII based protocol that communicates over a serial port at 4800 baud,
8bits, no parity and 1 stop bit.
The system as a whole, basically consists of two entities REMOTE and
CONSOLE. These two entities are connected via TCP/IP communication channel. The
GPS toolkit will be interfaced to the REMOTE entity. The data is read on the
REMOTE entity every second and pass it to the CONSOLE entity so that the user
gets the required information. The system can be viewed as a combination of
following modules.
Client Server communication
User interface
Program to read the serial port
Mapping
Role : Analysis of the application, Design the Data Base and Programming for
the Application. Worked mainly on Serial Port reading and GUI.
