Senior Software Engineer Snap-On Business Solutions 1995-Present
Richfield, Ohio

Snap-On Business Solutions (SBS) is a global provider of enterprise data
software and services that is highly focused on the automotive, power equipment,
and power sports markets. Software Developers
and Designers of SBS provide business intelligence solutions that are built on a
foundation
of domain knowledge, technology, and customer consideration.

As an integral member of a team of engineers whose responsibilities included the
design, implementation and maintenance of automotive data for a large global
client, I was responsible for reviewing the functional specifications of new
projects, analyzing data provided by the client, and developing strategic
solution(s) to meet the specifications of each project.

Development was done in a UNIX (Solaris 9) environment using
proprietary/non-proprietary technologies and programming languages that included:
C, Perl, UNIX Shell Scripting, Install Shield, TCLTK, JAVA, T-SQL, SQL Server
2005 (SSIS), Oracle PL/SQL, TOAD, and GEAR PRO Mastering Software.

Additionally, I produced and released software to production; maintained the
software; as well as provided graphic user and menu driven interfaces that
ensured timely production schedules

Notable Projects and Contributions

•	Client was reaching near data capacity (4 GB) on a DVD5 media. A new strategy
needed to be designed and implemented that would be compatible with their current
platform scenario. Using GEAR PRO Mastering Edition, a third party mastering
software, the capacity of the DVD was augmented from a single-sided, single layer
DVD to a single-sided, dual-layer DVD. The installation software was modified on
the media to handle the multiple platform configurations, e.g. Solaris 9 Server
to PC Clients, Windows 98, 2000, and XP stand-alone. This approach combined
multiple products delivered on CDs and DVDs into one media, the DVD9.

Personal contribution to strategy: Identification and implementation of GEAR PRO
Mastering Edition software to rectify capacity issue. Wrote compatibility code so
that client provided data would run smoothly and efficiently in conjunction with
GEAR PRO.

Bottom-line contribution: This strategy significantly reduced production time,
as well as cost, thereby saving Snap-On Business Solutions an excess of $100,000
per year.

•	For the benefit of improved development environments, SBS continually upgraded
their UNIX operating systems to the newer versions of Solaris and Oracle. Porting
code from Solaris 8 to Solaris 9 and Oracle 8i to Oracle 9i was a significant
operation and necessitated the production machinery to be shut down for periods
of time.

Personal contribution: Ported the production software from S8 to S9 and Oracle
8i to Oracle 9i while effectively allowing the production operation to continue
running with minimal disturbance. This project was completed in 3 weeks rather
than the 6 weeks it had been allotted.

Bottom-line contribution: This operation was completed ahead of schedule, which
translated into significant cost reduction for the company, as well as the timely
delivery of the monthly catalog to the client.

•	A client, who had an international presence, was distributing an inefficient
product to its clients and looked to Snap-On’s engineers to rectify the problem.

Personal contribution to the project: Drawing upon an expertise in
problem-solving that required the ability to analyze existing code, I was able to
determine what was salvageable; repairable; and could be debugged. The analysis
of the ascertained information resulted in rewriting the code in Oracle PL/SQL
which lead to a solid resolution of the problem.

Bottom-line contribution: The delivery of excellent data quality and data
integrity resulted in the renewal of the contract by the client which translated
into generated revenue of more than $200,000 per year for the life of the
contract.

•	Recognizing the need to move the electronic parts catalog from a DVD media to
a web-based application, SBS set out to develop a universal application.

Personal contribution to the project: Published data into Oracle and wrote
PL/SQL software to process new data and update Oracle databases. Additionally,
held the position of moving the publishing process to production by providing
scripting menus and GUI interfaces in order that the data would be published on a
regular and time-efficient basis.

Bottom-line contribution: The project was successfully completed on time. At its
pinnacle, it was representative of the efficiency and dedication of the team of
which I was an integral member. The team’s collective intelligences and
high-quality collaborative work effort lead to a deeper level of both personal
and professional success.
