Work Experience
4/01/08 – Present Homeland Security and US Customs and Border
Protection
Install and implement Tivoli LDAP 6.1, DB2 9.2, MQ Message Broker,
etc…… The Agency had a need to replace and existing LDAP system because of
performance reasons. This part of the Agency is not familiar with UDB and Tivoli
required it. They brought me on to manage DB2. 9.2 on LINUX. I set up the DB2
UDB environments for parallelism and disk access. I set up archive Logging and
recovery. Performed db2moves, Etc… These databases will also now be used for
Passenger monitoring and will be loaded with much more data. I’m used to a much
more hands on role. The LDAP group believes they can handle everything because
they have been supplied LDAP commands. I’m installing db2 8.2 on 20 LINUX
servers for an MQ project. These servers are going to be used to distribute the
queues across the network. I’m really don’t have all the details to date. I’ll
tune accordingly. I am familiar with scripting and can write them. As for the
Control Center, I prefer commands and scripts. When I started using the Control
center back in the 90’s, let’s just say it was a pain. I learned to do everything
natively.
12/01/07 - 4/01/08 Citigroup
New Castle Delaware
Senior DB2 UDB DBA
In-house implementation of Credit Card transaction
repository. TRX had been running the applications for several years. Citi expects
to save 17 million a year by running in-house. TRX used Linux as their front end.
All scripts and code had to be changed to work on AIX instead. In addition to
the daily support for application, I set up DB2 recovery and scheduling etc….
This was a very intense conversion and the DBA’s where expected to know the
applications
1990 - 2007 Pa. Higher Education Assistance Agency
1200 North 7TH Street
Harrisburg Pa. 17102
Senior DBA
Manage the development of DB2 systems on the AIX and Linux open system
platforms, methodology, processes, procedures, and roles and responsibilities in
support of these Systems.
Oversee the development of policies and standards within each of the
established servers.
Interface with CIO’s, Agency IT managers, and others to promote,
establish and maintain effective channels of communication.
Work with Agency CIO’s, Directors, and Managers on Technology
Infrastructure Plans and Implementations.
Work with many in-house Systems Developers on achieving performance and
answering technical concerns about platform dependency.
Accomplishments:
• Starting in 1997 the Agency rewrote a Loan Guarantee System. I was the lead
DB2 UDB DBA. The System was taken off the Mainframe and written using Microfocus
Cobol. Because the system was now platform independent we ran on AIX and could
sell to others or run for them. This was a hugh leaning curve, but I did receive
allot of practical hands on experience along with training.
• Played leading rule in getting COBOL application to compile and execute on the
AIX Platform. The Programs had to be able to run on any platform.
• Defined and managed DB2 Web Databases running on SuSE Linux Mainframe
• Developed methods, workflow and procedures to support and manage open system
databases.
• Played a lead role in establishing the first warehouses on the Open systems
platform using both ETL and DB2 Propagator.
• Developed and fully tested all disaster recovery procedures.
• Implemented first interfaces with Websphere MQ and DB2.
• Installed and tested first XML DB2 tables incorporating the compose and
decompose stored procedures.
• Developed code to automate Warehouse releases and update control tables both
on the mainframe sources and AIX targets without using the manual GUI.
• Attended many IBM classes on AIX, DB2, Replication, XML and Microfocus Cobol.
Several hundred hours of technical training.
• IBM certified in DB2.
• CICS Systems Programmer.
• Developed and Implemented HSM and related software procedures for DASD
management.
• Researched Derived data tools and options available to allow replication from
the mainframe to the AIX platform.
• Researching Legacy Systems Transformation vs Web Enablement as the Agency
moves forward with Web development.
1987 – 1990 Pennsylvania Department of Transportation
Bureau of Information Systems
Systems Programmer
Installed, customized and maintain software products for the full
MVS/XA operating system.
Accomplishments:
• Installed and implemented CICS and DB2.
• Installed all the current releases of these products and attended many hours
of IBM Education Classes.
• Wrote both CICS and DB2 programs to either enhance their Performance or in the
case of DB2 to take over old database system functions.
