Selected Achievements
Litter Box Project The Team of Harris and Weber, through research, determined
that the litter problem, within the Beaumont, TX area, to be a learned activity
rather than the litter itself. Therefore, to eliminate litter, we addressed
littering behavior. The team analysis of this data has brought to light that
Natural brush, Eco-trash, and a disregard to respecting personal areas are the
common threads shared by streets, residential and commercial properties, with
parking lots.
Corrective Actions:
Increase public awareness through advertisements
Request businesses to post an anti-litter sign on their properties
Request businesses to designate convenient disposal areas for cigarette
butts
Sending a formal letter to local area Elementary and Middle schools to
propose an area wide clean-up day in every month to help with city efforts
As this Earth-conscience generation grows, a letter will be sent to the
local area High Schools for students and staff to implement
Quality Assessment of Incarcerated Youth Project The Texas Youth Commission is
the states juvenile corrections agency, location was the Al Price Unit in
Beaumont, TX. While holding young offenders accountable for their actions, the
charge reaches far beyond simply punishing delinquent juveniles. TYC is not
strictly a time-based, punitive system. Young offenders must also demonstrate
success in a restorative program. The study found that youth are receiving help
and have a generally positive attitude toward education and life. About 50% of
the youth being held have come to grips and accepted the time of their
incarceration, but others still deny all wrong doing. About 45% youth feel that
17 year old should be sent to the adult system.
Corrective Actions:
Creation of the Professional Development Academy that develops
specialized training to all levels of staff in the agency.
Provide incarcerated youth with a properly implemented Treatment
program that require employees to acquire highly specialized and advanced skills
in behavior management.
Providing spiritual guidance and chaplaincy services.
