Projects in detail

    Blackbox
Description: Nexus 1000v is managed by Virtual Center (VC) which is windows
based application. Automation of VC operations using Cisco Automation framework
is not feasible as dependency on windows. To facilitate the automation using
Cisco Automation framework, a wrapper around VC is being created called as
Blackbox that runs on linux (CentOS). Cisco Automation framework will automate
the tests around blackbox that in turn execute the operations on VC.

My Contribution: The blackbox was started from design level. I initiated
discussions with onsite team to understand and gather the product requirements. I
completed the PRD based on the discussions, designed the architecture to be used
for implementation. PRD is incorporated with the plans for each phase of
implementation. I solely implemented the first phase to design the basic
structure to be followed for next phases. A successful demo was given to
different teams on using the blackbox for their automation which simplified their
efforts for Nexus 1000v product & feature automation. Currently second phase
implementation is in progress and also training other team members for blackbox.
As a starting member for this project, I’m leading the efforts and estimations
for blackbox.

Skill acquired: Virtualization, Cisco Nexus 1000v prodcuct, Linux, Java.

Role: Software Engineer

Nexus 1000v Scalability Testing

Description: The Cisco Nexus 1000V provides a distributed, layer 2 virtual
switch that extends across many virtualized hosts. The Cisco Nexus 1000V manages
a Datacenter defined by the vCenter Server. Each server in the Datacenter is
represented as a linecard in Cisco Nexus 1000V and can be managed as if it were a
line card in a physical Cisco switch. Cisco Nexus 1000V consists of the following
two components:
• Virtual Supervisor Module (VSM), which contains the Cisco CLI, configuration,
and high-level features
• Virtual Ethernet Module (VEM), which acts as a Line Card and runs in each
virtualized server to handle packet forwarding and other localized functions, and
is compatible with any upstream physical access layer switch that is Ethernet
standard's compliant. This includes Catalyst and Nexus switches from Cisco as
well as switches from other network vendors.

My Contribution: As part of the scalability testing team, we test the extreme
limits of the feature. I tested the scalability for hosts, virtual Ethernets,
port profiles for Nexus 1000v and results were updated to all concerned team
members and managers every week.

Skill acquired: Virtualization, Cisco Nexus 1000v prodcuct, Virtual Center.

Role: Software Engineer

    TCCOM
Description: TC Communications (TCCOM) is a designer and manufacturer of
environmentally-hardened industrial-grade optical communication equipments. TCCOM
has a multi-card chassis-based Gigabit Ethernet multi-service access platform,
TC3840 (Jumbo Switch®). Software to enable the operation of this platform is
being developed. IP Infusion’s ZebOS® protocol suite would be used in TC3840 for
providing a robust switching solution. The ZebOS® Network Platform Layer 2
Protocol Modules are a family of Ethernet bridging, Spanning Tree, Multicast, and
VLAN software packages that enable advanced Layer 2 functionality for vendors
building routing and switching equipment. The ZebOS Layer 2 Protocol Modules
leverage the command line interface (CLI) and the kernel management capabilities
of the ZebOS Network Services Manager (NSM). The ZebOS Network Platform Layer 2
Protocol Modules support IP Infusion’s Platform Abstraction Layer (PAL) and
Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL), thus supporting portability to a variety of
network processors and ASICs.

My Contribution: As part of the TCCOM team, I wrote Test Case design document
that is shared with TCCOM. I wrote test plans for Port mirroring and Chassis
Management based on the IEEE and RFC standards for TCCOM TC3840 switch. My
responsibilities include building setup for the test environment, testing of all
L2 protocols on TC3840 switch, find the issues and raise defects if any using
clear quest web based tool for defect tracking. Automate the test cases in TCL
for automated testing in future. Verify the defects that are fixed by the
development team and move them to verified state. Participate in weekly
conference call and update the status with the client.

Skill acquired: Linux, TCL, ZebOS, Clear Quest, L2 protocol standards.

Role: Senior project engineer.

 Extension Assigner

Description: Wal-Mart, largest customer for Cisco Systems, Inc. required the
feature to assign extension automatically when ever a new IP phone is plugged in
the store network.
This project enhances the CCME (Cisco Voice Software) and gives flexibility to
enable Extension Assigner feature on Cisco IOS when required. Extension Assigner
is the feature which allows the retailer to plug in IP phone to the IP network
and assign the required extension to the phone with-out the help of an expert.
This eases the work of the retailer and also reduces the cost of installation.
This project targets the retailer business where 30 or 40 phones are required and
need to assign number to the phone without much installation cost and problem.
